They are supposed to be white and made of rice flour. Symbolic of the arrival of Krishna, one of our many important deities, on his birthday. Krishna is pictured as a mischievous little kid that steals butter. So the white footprints symbolise his having stepped on butter.
Why blue? That is not the tradition. It’s my workaround because I have white floors and rice flour won’t show. Krishna is supposed to be of blue black complexion. Hence all pictures you see of him would be blue. Like the aliens in avatar. Which is apt because Krishna is the avatar (reincarnation) of Vishnu. Also a blue black deity.
